Cotter Pins vs. Press-On Caps: The Small Part That Decides How Long Your Wheel Kit Lasts
Most people shopping for a generator wheel kit compare tires and price, and skip right past the one part that actually determines whether the wheels stay on for years or work themselves loose after a season: how the wheel is secured to the axle.
A lot of wheel kits on the market use press-on caps, a friction-fit cap that snaps over the end of the axle to hold the wheel in place. They're fast and cheap to manufacture, but friction-fit connections can loosen over time with vibration, repeated use, or temperature changes, and once a press-on cap works loose or cracks, it's easy to lose entirely, especially outdoors on a job site or in gravel.
Most of our kits are built with cotter pins instead. A cotter pin passes through a drilled hole in the axle and is bent to lock in place, the same fastening method used in trailer hitches, heavy equipment, and other places where a wheel genuinely cannot be allowed to come loose. It takes a few extra seconds to install, but it's a mechanical lock rather than a friction fit, so it holds up far better to repeated rolling, bumps, and outdoor conditions over the life of the cart. Our one remaining kit still using a press-on cap is currently transitioning over to the same cotter pin design, so soon it'll be cotter pins across the board.
It's a small difference on a spec sheet, but it's the kind of detail that shows up two years later, when a press-on cap kit is wobbling or missing a wheel entirely, and a cotter-pinned cart is still solid. If you're comparing wheel kits and the listing doesn't say how the wheels attach, it's worth asking.
